1. Identify Relevant Keywords

As with standard SEO that is used to drive new customers to a website, the same advertising technique is used when searching for products on Amazon. How do you rank higher? Optimizing for the right set of keywords.

Conduct a quick test. Search for the most simple name of your product. Is it showing up on the first page? If not, you will want to update your Amazon SEO keywords with these steps:

  • Research keywords and searches relevant to your products
  • Set correct categories and sub-categories for your products
  • Make sure target keywords are listed not only in the description, but also in the features and in each product title.

2. Update Product Imagery

As the old saying goes, you eat with your eyes first. Same goes for Amazon shoppers. When browsing a selection of similar products, they will immediately gravitate towards items and sellers that have high quality, up to date images simply because they indicate a higher quality product.

An easy way to improve your product imagery is by investing in a professional product photographer.

Professional photography not in the budget? We’re lucky enough to live in the age of the smartphone - most of which have high quality cameras built in. Try to find a clean, solid colored background with natural lighting to photograph your images against. Make sure the products in your images are clear and shown from multiple angles, ensuring the photographs demonstrate the quality of your product and brand.

3. Optimize all other elements of your product listing

We’ve covered a few optimizations in tips 1-2, but here are some additional pointers to keep in mind:

  • Create a strong title for each product in your Amazon store. It should not only appeal to buyers, but also cover your target keywords (see tip #1).
  • Add top keywords that do not make it into your title to the body of your product description. These could be added in as a short paragraph, or as a bulleted list that potential customers can quickly scan.

4. Keep Pricing Competitive

It may come as a surprise, but not all customers coming to Amazon want to see the lowest price available. Another cliche “you get what you pay for” rings true when you think of pricing, and too low of a price can lead buyers to equate your product with cheap quality, and too high could make buyers look at your competitors.

Use Amazon repricing software, along with competitive research, to identify the pricing sweet spot which should allow you to make the most margin on your product while also remaining competitive.

5. Participate in Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is one of the simplest ways to increase conversion rates when joining the Amazon community. Your products will become Prime-eligible which is more appealing to buyers.

They trust the experience and know they will quickly and safely receive their item.

6. Promote your products with PPC

There are a number of different paid advertising options that Amazon offers to sellers to help increase product sales.

The advantage? Your business only pays per click. Meaning you only pay when someone clicks into your product, not impressions (when a customer sees your ad). A few pay per click (PPC) options are:

  • Sponsored Product Ads: These ads advertise one product above the organic search results
  • Sponsored Brands: These appear as the top three products at the top of the search results
  • Product Display Ads: These will appear as a one-product advertisement on the product details page

7. Increase Product Reviews

In life and in business, you’re only as good as your reputation. This is especially true when selling online as new buyers often base their purchasing decision on the positive or negative reviews they can see.

The more buyers you can have vouch for your products, and the customer support you show each review will lead to an increase in conversion down the road.

8. Upsell Your Other Products Through Linking

A unique feature on Amazon is the “frequently bought together” option. This is a simple way to link your products together and show the total price to buyers upfront. This leads to customer transparency and an increase in product purchase as it’s simple for them to click “Add Products to Cart” in one button click.

To leverage this tool, you’ll want to make sure your images are fully updated (see tip #2) and product titles are optimized (tip #3) to give customers all required information on your product without clicking into each item individually.
